The appearance, size, structure of nose can be changed or improved by surgery, commonly referred to as nose surgery or nasal surgery. The technical term for which is ‘Rhinoplasty’. Cosmetic rhinoplasty is the medical term for nasal surgery done to improve the looks and appearance of the nose. It may also be referred to as reconstructive rhinoplasty. Nasal surgery is not a newfound fad or breakthrough in medical sciences as it has been done ages ago in India by Sushata Samgita, during 600 BC. Nasal surgery done by Sushata Samgita was more or less a forerunner of modern day reconstructive rhinoplasty.
Legend has it that, during those days, anybody convicted of theft had their noses cut off and freed. To save themselves from shame and social boycott they had reconstructive rhinoplasty done to restore their cut noses. This means a new lease of life for them in the primitive society. In present day, where punishments in civilized society is not so barbaric, cosmetic rhinoplasty is done to give a person’s nose a better appearance to make them look and feel more good. Cosmetic surgery is a boon for people who may have or think that they have abnormal noses, like too long, too short, a hump back nose or a hanging septum. Nasal surgery is also done to correct congenital defects in the nose. It is mostly a simple procedure done under local anesthesia. Complications such as post nasal surgery infection are uncommon unless the person suffered from common cold or flu in the previous weeks of the surgery.
